Thursday December 18, 2008

Today in SCIENCE we:

  • Tried to do Current Events....not good people.
  • Reviewed how to count elements, atoms, molecules & compounds....can you figure out how many components are in a formula? Do you know how to write a formula?
  • You had time in class today to complete the following: TSQ4R sia9 p150-153, omit p151, DO c&r p 153 #1-7. THEN you were to design & create a poster/title page that demonstrates your UNDERSTANDING of the similarities and DIFFERENCES between MOLECULAR & IONIC compounds. These 3 (three) tasks are due first thing the day we get back from winter break. WEEK 5, Day 2, so that is 9AM sharp.
  • Do you remember what a Venn diagram is? Hint (2) TWO circles that overlap.
  • Some of you used your time very well this class. GOOD WORK.
  • We also watched a bit of a Body Worlds dvd. What was that about? Why would I want you to see that?
  • An INDEPENDENT LEARNER would REVIEW MATTER & CHEMICAL CHANGE for at least 10 minutes EVERY day over the break. It is just a suggestion....a strong suggestion.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS 9C!

Tuesday December 16, 2008

Today in SCIENCE we:

  • Did Current Events.
  • Did Vocabulary.
  • Handed in our Mentos & Diet Coke Journal Entries. Do this by THURSDAY.
  • Talked about ELECTRON SHELLS. What is an electron shell?
  • TSQ4R sia9 p144-147. DO YOU UNDERSTAND?
  • DO sia9 p149 #1-9.
  • Can you NAME characteristics of an IONIC compound?
  • Did an open book quiz & reviewed it. HOW DID YOU DO? WHAT SPECIFIC ACTIONS MUST YOU TAKE TO DO BETTER?
  • AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST: soil = heterogeneous mixture, salt solution = homogeneous if it is mixed properly.

Friday December 12, 2008

Today in SCIENCE we:
  • Got vocabulary #20
  • Did current events.
  • Talked about ISOTOPES. What is an ISOTOPE?
  • How do you tell how many neutrons are in an atom of an element?
  • What is an ELECTRON SHELL? How many electrons fly around in each shell?
  • Did a quiz....do you know the difference between physical & chemical changes?
  • What is the difference between MELTING & COOKING?
  • What happened when we put mentos candies into diet coke? Was there a difference when we used the fruit flavoured ones versus the mint flavoured ones? HOW DID YOU KNOW? WHY did that reaction occur? What do you think is happening? What did our experiment look like? What were the variables?
  • Please Complete your journal entry that discusses what you saw, and why you saw this.
  • Please read & UNDERSTAND sia9 p138-142. Did you read the Key Concepts & Learning Outcomes? Have you met them?
  • Do the skill practice on p 142.
  • Do sia9 p143 c&r #1-3

ANY QUESTIONS? SEE ME!

Hey, howcome you didn't stack the chairs before you left today?

Wednesday December 10, 2008

Today in SCIENCE we:
  • Had Current Events. WELL DONE! Is it your turn on Friday?
  • Reviewed our questions from last day.
  • Do you understand the difference between Physical & Chemical Properties? Physical & Chemical Changes?
  • Can you define the four (4) types of mixtures?
  • DO sia9 p111 Focus on #1-3. You had time in class, this should be DONE.
  • Talked about ATOMS & ELEMENTS again. How are they related?
  • What is a NEUTRAL atom?
  • Read p126-133, omit p 130-131
  • DO Skill Practice p 129 & 133
  • Do you know how to use a periodic table? What do the different numbers mean?
  • DO sia9 p 136 #1-6.
  • What is the difference between atomic # & atomic mass? How can we figure out the number of NEUTRONS in an element? Took notes about it. Do your NOTES make SENSE? MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT THIS IS BY FRIDAY.
  • Talked about predicting atomic numbers and properties of NEW elements.
  • Want to work ahead??? Try sia9 p134 #1-9.

We have fallen a bit behind, so I will push us even more than usual to catch up.

YOU CAN DO IT.

Monday December 8, 2008

Today in SCIENCE we:
  • Did Review.
  • Watched Planet Earth.
  • Are you up to date with your work?

Thursday, December 4, 2008

Thursday December 4, 2008

Today in SCIENCE we:
  • Finished our Famous Scientist Presentations.
  • Did Current Events. YOU NEED TO BE READY. THAT MEANS COMING TO CLASS WITH YOUR CURRENT EVENT PRINTED.
  • Did an on-line activity about the PHYSICAL properties of substances. What did the meteorite contain? How can you SUPPORT your answer?
  • Handed in our "no chemical" paragraphs.
  • Talked about the STRUCTURE of an ATOM. Again.
  • Talked about STATES of MATTER & CHANGES in STATES of Matter. How do the atoms/molecules move? How much space is between them? Watched the changes on the smart board.
  • Can you NAME & DESCRIBE all the ways that MATTER changes STATES?
  • How are ATOMS & ELEMENTS related?
  • How are ATOMS & Matter related?
  • Can you name the 4 states of matter and describe what their atoms/molecules are doing?
  • READ: sia9 p97-99 (the green boxes are IMPORTANT), p102-103.
  • DO: sia9 p110 ayl #4-10 (YES you do need to write down the question). Due Monday.

FOWLER FORMS & REPORT CARD ENVELOPES....DO I HAVE THEM?

Tuesday, December 2, 2008

Tuesday December 2, 2008

Today in SCIENCE we:
  • Talked about what you did while I was away.
  • Handed in your report card envelopes and Fowler Field trip forms
  • Did your famous scientist presentations & handed in your write up. You should have been READY to go.
  • Why did we talk about the movie Iron Man today?
  • Homework:

"This product contains no chemicals"

  • Anaylse this statement: is it true or false? WHY? SUPPORT YOUR ANSWER.
  • How could you re-word this statement to make it more accurate?
  • CURRENT EVENTS ON THURSDAY. YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE, PLEASE BE READY.
  • You got a new current events schedule. Highlight your name! Write your day in your agenda!
