Today in SCIENCE we:

  • Tried to do Current Events....not good people.
  • Reviewed how to count elements, atoms, molecules & compounds....can you figure out how many components are in a formula? Do you know how to write a formula?
  • You had time in class today to complete the following: TSQ4R sia9 p150-153, omit p151, DO c&r p 153 #1-7. THEN you were to design & create a poster/title page that demonstrates your UNDERSTANDING of the similarities and DIFFERENCES between MOLECULAR & IONIC compounds. These 3 (three) tasks are due first thing the day we get back from winter break. WEEK 5, Day 2, so that is 9AM sharp.
  • Do you remember what a Venn diagram is? Hint (2) TWO circles that overlap.
  • Some of you used your time very well this class. GOOD WORK.
  • We also watched a bit of a Body Worlds dvd. What was that about? Why would I want you to see that?
  • An INDEPENDENT LEARNER would REVIEW MATTER & CHEMICAL CHANGE for at least 10 minutes EVERY day over the break. It is just a suggestion....a strong suggestion.

  • Did current events.
  • Talked about ISOTOPES. What is an ISOTOPE?
  • How do you tell how many neutrons are in an atom of an element?
  • What is an ELECTRON SHELL? How many electrons fly around in each shell?
  • Did a quiz....do you know the difference between physical & chemical changes?
  • What is the difference between MELTING & COOKING?
  • What happened when we put mentos candies into diet coke? Was there a difference when we used the fruit flavoured ones versus the mint flavoured ones? HOW DID YOU KNOW? WHY did that reaction occur? What do you think is happening? What did our experiment look like? What were the variables?
  • Please Complete your journal entry that discusses what you saw, and why you saw this.

  • Reviewed our questions from last day.
  • Do you understand the difference between Physical & Chemical Properties? Physical & Chemical Changes?
  • Can you define the four (4) types of mixtures?
  • DO sia9 p111 Focus on #1-3. You had time in class, this should be DONE.
  • Talked about ATOMS & ELEMENTS again. How are they related?
  • What is a NEUTRAL atom?
  • Read p126-133, omit p 130-131
  • DO Skill Practice p 129 & 133
  • Do you know how to use a periodic table? What do the different numbers mean?
  • DO sia9 p 136 #1-6.
  • What is the difference between atomic # & atomic mass? How can we figure out the number of NEUTRONS in an element? Took notes about it. Do your NOTES make SENSE? MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT THIS IS BY FRIDAY.
  • Talked about predicting atomic numbers and properties of NEW elements.

  • Finished our Famous Scientist Presentations.
  • Did Current Events. YOU NEED TO BE READY. THAT MEANS COMING TO CLASS WITH YOUR CURRENT EVENT PRINTED.
  • Did an on-line activity about the PHYSICAL properties of substances. What did the meteorite contain? How can you SUPPORT your answer?
  • Handed in our "no chemical" paragraphs.
  • Talked about the STRUCTURE of an ATOM. Again.
  • Talked about STATES of MATTER & CHANGES in STATES of Matter. How do the atoms/molecules move? How much space is between them? Watched the changes on the smart board.
  • Can you NAME & DESCRIBE all the ways that MATTER changes STATES?
  • How are ATOMS & ELEMENTS related?
  • How are ATOMS & Matter related?
  • Can you name the 4 states of matter and describe what their atoms/molecules are doing?

Today in SCIENCE we:
  • Reviewed the assembly with Mr. Barbor. Watched two videos and wrote journal entries about them. How do they affect you? What did they make you think about?
  • Talked about what you did while I was away.
  • Current Events - Be ready when it is your turn people.
  • Who is the Cleanest of them all?? How did we handle this multiple choice question?
  • Put our vocabulary in our vocabulary duotangs
  • Had a homework check on our Unit Review - you know, when I ask you to make up time after
  • school or at lunch to do your work, it is for your own good & you should be there. Now I will need to make phonecalls home.
  • Did a "quick lab" on Page 238 - we reviewed the questions and how to read the map - should be DONE & Handed in.
  • Did a KWL chart for Environmental Chemistry - how much information does yours contain?
    There was a list on the board of those students who have not handed in their lab safety contracts and those who have not completed their safety test corrections. These issues need to be taken care of before you can participate in any lab activities.
  • Environmental Chemistry UNIT FINAL NEXT WEDNESDAY.

Today in SCIENCE we:
  • Did current events. Check the schedule, is it your turn on MONDAY?
  • Handed in vocabulary #14, did vocabulary #15.
  • Started the ayl on p234. #1-11 are due on MONDAY. You should be AT LEAST halfway finished. Format your assignment properly. That means a proper title, your name, class, date, & writing out the questions.
  • Talked about ppm & did some examples. What is ppm? Complete the worksheet you got & hand it in. We did the first question together, if you have questions, ASK.
  • Started the "quick lab" on p238, it is due on MONDAY.
  • TSQ4R p235-242.
  • Bring your QUIZ on Monday, we will be reviewing it.
  • You need to focus in class. If you are socializing or otherwise not working, I can only assume that you have finished everything and know everything and are ready for a quiz.

Today in SCIENCE we:
  • Did Current Events - should be an easy 5% of your grade, you just have to be ready.
  • Got vocabulary #14. Handed in vocabulary #12 & 13.
    Up to vocabulary #13 should be complete and in your vocabulary duotang, this should be left in the classroom at all times. This should have been another easy 5% of your grade.
  • Reviewed lockdown procedures. There is a greater possibility of a real lockdown than a real fire.
  • You need to take this seriously, if you endanger your classmates, you will be sent into the hallway - which is not a safe place to be during a lockdown.
  • Handed in our Inquire on p231.
  • Finished our station for the environmental recovery project. Based on your data & your report, do you think I would hire you again?

What about your work ethic?


  • You saw your Marks today. What needs to change?
  • They are printing reportcards tomorrow. Do you think I will have time to mark and enter what you handed in today? I told you two weeks ago the cut off was last THURSDAY.

  • Watched a short video and set up our groups for our Environmental Chemistry Recovery project.
  • Prepared for our part of the project by choosing our assignment and reading the requirements of it.

  • Did c&r on sia9 p190 #1-11. You need a proper title, to write down the questions (this way I know you've read it at least once), and to answer the questions in complete sentences. Due FRIDAY.
  • We talked about why the LHC was shut down.
  • We learned the acids & bases song!! We got a hand out that we completed while listening to one of the BEST most INFORMATIVE songs of all time. Hey, it is up there with the elements song!

  • Are your notes properly labelled with a title (that includes page numbers), your name, class, and the date?

  • Got a worksheet on variables & observations - due Monday.
  • Watched a "rap" video about the Hadron Particle Smasher. Then we watched a National Geographic video about the smasher & the results of today's big experiment. What are they doing & why?
  • Got 7 more vocabulary words, due MONDAY. Don't forget you need to include the term, definition (in your own words), a picture, & a sentence that uses the term correctly.
